Matt Kamer
Hi there! I'm Matt. I was born in Hawaii but am actually half Korean! I haven’t had the chance to visit South Korea yet, but I do know how to cook at least one Korean dish and speak a few words of the language. I grew up in Glendale, AZ, went to undergrad at the University of Colorado Denver, and eventually wound up as a COW in the Midwest…a figurative COW- I attended medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCOW) in Milwaukee. I'm super happy to be back in the Phoenix area for residency. I chose Abrazo because of the location, the opportunity to help create the culture of a new program, and because we're the only categorical residency program at a busy level 1 trauma center. I was impressed with the people during my interview day, but I've just been blown away by how awesome everybody is since getting here.
Outside of medicine, I am a Phoenix Suns fanatic, hiking lover, and music aficionado. So much so that I was sober-raving to Deep House back when it was still called Techno. I also often find time to enjoy the great indoors, especially during the summer when you can’t really tell the difference between outside vs the inside of an oven. During those times, I’m usually watching basketball or a movie, playing video games, reading a book, or just hanging out with my wife and dog.
Within medicine, my interests are mostly in medical education, especially undergraduate medical education and diagnostic reasoning, as well as medical toxicology. I love working with medical students, and one of my main professional goals is to be an EM clerkship director one day, regardless of whether or not I decide to do a tox fellowship.
